In the beginning, there were only web pages. Single locations that displayed information much like a digital business card. It was good.In some cases, a collection of pages all containing related information were linked together by savvy developers and sites were brought to existance. These were like digitial books or portfolios, and had seemingly infinite potential only contained by the imagination.
Over a surprisingly short span of time the human imagination and advances in technology made the web a staggeringly large place. With social media sites and blogs, podcasts and news groups. It became impossible to participate in everything on the web. .So the entire creation of the word 'Web Presence' was to define what part of the web a person or a business participated in. This included a web site, facebook or twitter, a blog, everything that person or business had control of online was their 'Web Presence'
Over a surprisingly shorter span of time, some savvy developers got together and finally got the web wirelessly in everyone's hands and so they can be online whenever the desire or opportunity struck them. But it was no use, nobody could do everything on the web. It just wasn't possible, 'Web Presence' on a business level was abandoned for a more all-encompassing, and more ominous sounding option. Your 'Digital Footprint" as defined by Wikipedia:
A digital footprint is a trail left by an entity's interactions in a digital environment; including their usage of TV, mobile phone, internet and world wide web, mobile web and other devices and sensors.
Most small businesses that need web site services are far from measuring their digial footprint. Many people still are working on their web presence in a regional market. The most effective way to judge if a website is "good" or not is it's ease of navigation, legibility, and weather or not it serves it's intended function. It does not have to be complicated to be effective.
Most small business can also benifit by adding additional web features linked to their site, but not all business would be successful with the same features. For example, A musical group that has a website would also benefit from having a all forms of social media to appeal to fans, but would not do very well on Google AdWords. However a building contractor with a website would not benifit from social media as well they would a presence with Angies List or the Google AdWords. How do you know which web features effectively improve your web presence? Through Analytics, it is possible to track over time what drives traffic to your website, you can then focus your efforts on the most effective web tools, you can also track how much return an ad investment brought in order to decide if it's worth repeating the campain.
